Since Summer 2021, we have been identifying and building a database of sites, including architectural sites, art and manuscript collections, inscriptions, communities that participate in the living medieval arts, such as language, martial arts, music, or crafts, sites important to the Lenape people who lived in New York prior to first contact with Europeans in 1609, and sites that suggest sometimes unlikely parallels between a modern mega city and its medieval counterparts. From this database, we will begin work on a website and app that constructs suggested itineraries for experiencing specific elements of the medieval in New York while also allowing users to develop their own itinerary based on individual interests. We will also produce multimedia materials to enrich the experience. The long-term goal of this project is to produce AR-VR components that will give users an immersive experience with multimedia content and expert commentary, brought together in a mobile app.
